DON’T POLITICISE SECURITY MATTERS – GOV. GODSWILL AKPABIO

Governor Godswill O. Akpabio has called on government at various levels in the country to stop politicising security matters in the interest of peace and unity among the citizenry.

Chief Akpabio, who made the call at the weekend when members of the Nigerian Institute for Industrial Security, led by its Executive Secretary, Mr. Wilson Esangbedo paid him a courtesy visit at Government House, Uyo, attributed security challenges in the country to attitude of some people playing politics with security.

He remarked “We should not politicise security issues to avoid a breakdown of law and order, rather we must give the people a sense of belonging by loving one another. We must embrace change at all times by stopping crime, bomb blasts etc. We must use education to sensitise our children against crimes. The security services must conduct proper screening during recruitment so as not to mistakenly employ criminals their security fold.

“In Akwa Ibom State, we would continue to support the security agencies in the state. We want to work with the State Security Service (SSS) at all times. So, I call on the organizations to establish an institution in the state by sending new members for training to be trained by the SSS”.

Akpabio, however, called on religious leaders in the country to preach peace to their subjects to ensure peaceful co-existence and togetherness among people of diverse backgrounds.

The Governor, who got ”Best Security Conscious State Award” and was conferred with ”Life Fellowship Award”, thanked the institute for the awards, pointing out that the various infrastructure in the state were built not only for the Akwa Ibom people but also for the entire country to create a small oasis of peace for Nigerians.

He hinted of his government preparedness to commence the building of Nigerian Institute for Security Centre in the state next year for training of security personnel, applauding the institute for its readiness to confer chartered membership status on its members after training.

The team leader, Mr. Esangbedo the executive disclosed that the institute was registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission with over 500 members in the sub-region who are top dignitaries in the country while the purpose of the institution is to promote and encourage industrial security through their goals in the areas of education, through conducting examinations for members of the institution, organizing conferences, workshops and seminars for them to update their knowledge to adapt positively in the society.

He also disclosed that the institute conducts research into security matters, organizes programmes, coaches members on the ethics of conduct, provides security agencies with more information, pointing out that members would be certified to practise after training.

The Executive Director commended the Governor on his development strides, remarking that the Governor has shown what true leadership is like, explaining that ”Best Security Conscious State award” is given to the state due to the transformation of infrastructure, which has helped to reduce the crime level in the state and provide jobs to the masses to support the State Government and security agencies in the state.
