ON ZONING POLICY AND THE ABUSE OF SOCIAL MEDIA TO DENIGRATE NOTABLE IBIBIO LEADERS AND OTHER AKWA IBOM PERSONS

.

Times and methods have changed considerably considering ways by which Ibibio socio-cultural and political institutions need be preserved and sustained. As a people, we are not impervious to the global wind of change that is forcibly creating “new normals” while rusticating many things and old ways of the status quo. We respectfully call on Ibibio leaders, elders and stakeholders to re-calibrate approaches and begin to consult widely in order to wisely distill from various opinions and arrive at best collective decisions that are consistent with changing demographics and times.

.

ON THE ZONING PRINCIPLE

.

  1. We cannot deny that the principle of federal character has worked favorably across the board and in many ways to advance the Ibibio people. We cannot also deny that we, as a people, have earlier on embraced and benefited from zoning those roots in the principle of federal character that has worked positively to protect minority rights in Nigeria.
  1. Truth is that the federal character principle has helped to include minority groups in all sectors of the Nigeria’s socio-economy just as the zoning principle in Nigeria was a necessary tool for minority inclusion towards equity, fairness and justice in the national arena. This truth remains the strongest reason and basis for the zoning principle as adopted by some political parties and supported by many Nigerians. Yet, the zoning principle remains imperfect.
  1. As with all imperfect things threatening to draw back an upward mobile socio-economy and polity, which kind of polity Akwa Ibom State has become, we must now boldly and carefully expand the horizon of the zoning principle as practiced in the State. Additional options need not exclude, but must expand from mere geography (senatorial districts for gubernatorial election) to include other progress yielding options that are consistent with today’s advancing democratic world. If the zoning principle must continue, Akwa Ibom State cannot stagnate in status quo while there is room for improvements; the zoning principle begs for improvement.
  1. UKO IBIBIO believes that there is a stronger and fast expanding demographic base in Akwa Ibom State ready for an additional option on the zoning platform – the Progress Option. Competing on the same platform against mere geography, the Progress Option promises a major paradigm shift and includes a level playing field for good and knowledgeable leaders to emerge. It pools all progressive persons under an umbrella covering the best social, economic and political issues that are capable of adding value to our collective experiences and desires for a happy, peaceful and prosperous society.
  1. The Progress Option is defined to include all persons and all genuinely progressive issues measuring up to demands of our constantly changing civilization and world view, such that is also consistent with the culture of uncommon transformation that is engulfing Akwa Ibom State. Not only will the Progress Option consolidate our democratic experience and institutions, it becomes a unity platform appealing both to those who have genuine reasons to support the zoning principle as practiced in Nigeria and to those who do not to support the zoning principle.
  1. The Progress Option is consistent with the Ibibio Renaissance – a founding objective and an all-purpose initiative of the UKO IBIBIO, which embraces other ethnic groups and vigorously works to overtake and improve upon the status quo. Therefore, we call on political parties, groups and persons amenable to zoning principle to now expand and put the Progress Option on their platforms.
  1. While we encourage all Ibibio and other Akwa Ibom citizens to politically engage this Option, we are determine to aggressively promote and work hard with other Akwa Ibom groups, politicians and other persons towards establishing it as a veritable Option. This Option is good for Akwa Ibom State. Therefore, we call on all Akwa Ibom citizens (including politicians), socio-cultural groups and political parties to embrace the Progress Option as matter expediency, and because of its potentially large, vibrant and exploitable support base of stakeholders who are also eligible voters.

ON THE ABUSE OF SOCIAL MEDIA TO DENIGRATE NOTABLE IBIBIO LEADERS AND OTHER AKWA IBOM PERSONS

..

  1. UKO IBIBIO notes, with serious concern, the proliferation of misguided persons abusing the powers of social media to attack Ibibio (and other Akwa Ibom) persons who are government officials or are perceived to have interest in running for various positions in the upcoming 2015 general elections.
  1. In particular, we condemn all abusive, spurious and virulent attacks making rounds on the Internet against His Excellency Chief Godswill Akpabio (Executive Governor of Akwa Ibom State and an Ibibio chief), Obong Umana O. Umana (Secretary to the State Government), and a few other government officials. Noting that no government official (or notable Akwa Ibom person for that matter) must be subjected to debilitating lies and divisive schemes by a few misinformed and disgruntled politicians bent on discrediting Akwa Ibom State, we warn all concerned to desist from their misguided ways. We will not fold our hands to watch their on-line persecution of Akwa Ibom State in general, or fail to react measure-for-measure against their unwarranted denigration of Ibibio sons and daughters in particular.
  1. While remaining in the vanguard to establish, protect and defend the Ibibio Renaissance, we will do whatever it takes to help stabilize our democratic institutions, encourage Ibibio (and all good Akwa Ibom) sons and daughters to freely participate, and obliterate all line item things in the disruptive agenda of mischievous persons who are bent on reversing the culture of transformation so far experienced in the State.
  1. Therefore, we unequivocally condemn all actions and practices by those misguided and misinformed persons parading as Internet activists. For the avoidance of doubt, we will aggressively and widely use legitimate means and methods to checkmate their waywardness in order to protect the rights of qualified people to freely participate in the democratic process and for the State to move along in its path of progress.
  1. At this time, UKO IBIBIO declares no political agenda with respect to potential candidates who are even yet to declare their intentions. Nevertheless, we passionately pursue the Ibibio Renaissance as we see fit – an objective upon which our organization is founded and such that clearly stands on the unity of all Akwa Ibom people for a better society.
