AKS Press Release: Qualitative Education Is Best Empowerment Package… Gov. Godswill Akpabio August 21, 2013

 Governor Godswill Akpabio of Akwa Ibom State has identified education as the ultimate tool for engaging and empowering the youths to be self-reliant.

Speaking while commissioning some educational-based projects in ONNA Local Government Area of the State on Monday, Governor Akpabio said, apart from providing employment opportunities for the youths, education is a veritable tool that can help in the fight against poverty.

Represented by his Commissioner for Education, Prof. Atim Antai, he said in addition to the free and compulsory education programme of his administration, providing a conducive environment for quality teaching and learning was another top priority of his government.

“Only last week, His Excellency approved the recruitment of some teachers, because of his love for qualitative education” adding that “When you teach a man how to fish, he will eat fish for the rest of his life.” Prof Antai said.

Describing education as the best gift governments or parents can give to their citizens and children, Governor Akpabio said an educated man can lead a happy and healthy life even in the face of challenges and because he is equipped with capacity to effectively handle the responsibilities of life.

The school projects inaugurated were two 4-classroom/Office/Store blocks; and a five-classroom block at African Church Central School, Awa Ubium; a five-classroom block and a six-classroom/Office/Store block  at QIC Primary School, Awa Iman; a four-classroom/Office/Store and a classroom block at African Church Town School, Ikot Annang.

Also, as part of his administration’s empowerment package, the Governor commissioned Skill Acquisition Centre at Ikot Akpatek, where he challenged the youths of the area to take advantage of the Centre to equip themselves with the necessary skills to meet up with the socio-economic challenges of the 21st century.

Still in Ikot Akpatek, Chief Akpabio, as part of his administration’s determination to reduce water-borne diseases among the citizenry, inaugurated a Hybrid Power Mini Water project for the people and advised them to protect it against vandalism.

Speaking at Abak Ishiet, where a rehabilitated Town Hall was commissioned, the Governor expressed the hope that the Civic Centre will serve as a “rallying point of unity for the people to meet and plan for their future and welfare.”

A prominent son of ONNA and Chairman, Akwa Ibom State Road Maintenance Agency, Bishop Samuel Akpan, and the Member representing ONNA State Constituency, Hon. Godwin Oton Charlie commended Chief Akpabio for extending his Uncommon Transformation programme to every nook and cranny of the State and for his passion towards developing the State.

Receiving the Governor and his entourage at ONNA Local Government Council Hall, Abat, the Chairman, Hon. Ufot Sunday Akpan who described Chief Akpabio as education-friendly Governor, said the inauguration of the projects was a right step in the right direction, stressing that the facilities will enhance teaching and learning process.

“The importance of borehole water cannot be overemphasized because of good health derivable from it. Water is life and by its provision, the benefitting communities will no doubt experience a new lease of life. The government and good people of ONNA are grateful to you for the appointment of our son, Mr Emmanuel Udom as Secretary to State Government.” Hon. Akpan stated.

After the projects inauguration, the Governor’s entourage paid a courtesy visit to the Paramount Ruler of ONNA, Edidem Akpabio Udoukpa in his palace at Ikot Edor.
